ALIMIA

Directly over the ridge behind Chalki is the village of Pondamos with a small cove and simple restaurant. A road leads up past a chapel and cemetery to the top of the hill whence you can look down on Chalki. We planned to visit this cove, then set sail east to Alimia, a small island where the Germans built a submarine base to prey on shipping along the Turkish coast. The barracks and other ruins are still there.

Cemetery

The cemetery was quite beautiful. Most of the crypts were of white marbe, many elaborately carved and adorned with picture of the deceased.
