The Joy of Weaving
Weaving is perhaps the oldest craft of mankind. Our ancestors depended on baskets woven from branches and reeds to transport their household goods. Tightly woven baskets were used to carry water. Garments woven of horsehair and wool, and later silk and cotton, replaced skins long ago. Natural colors are my preference, the dyes derived from roots and berries. Older Navajo rugs evidence the diversity and strength that can be obtained from natural dyes. Acrylic dyes have recently afforded the opportunity for stronger coloring, but can clash with the natural world around us.
